Argh! Winamp + Gtalk freeze & solution
I use winamp. I have used winamp since version 1.51 and ever since then it has been by favorite media player. I like winamp because it is small & lightweight, unambiguous in its control structure, heavy on the plug-in capability and -best of all- consistent. I pick MP3 for my general music format and FLAC if I really want to toast the eardrums… but mostly MP3 – and winamp does it perfectly well. Winamp is great for sending audio out to another device or a raw file and it has had some great visualization software for years (milkdrop anyone?).
I use Gtalk. I have used Gtalk since it was released by Google and I love it. It is a clear, simple user interface with all of the options I need and it integrates well into Google. I also use Trillian for my other chat clients, but Gtalk is my main mode of IM.
Winamp and Gtalk don’t like eachother, apparently, when you tell Gtalk to display your “Current Music Track”. It bugged me for several months that I couldn’t have my current music track displayed… if I could scrobble it why couldn’t Gtalk work with it? Finally it bugged the last straw out of me and I looked for a solution. I found it, and its stupid!
Short answer: Put a winamp.m3u file in your winamp program files directory and it fixes Gtalk. bah!

Still using Trillian? I gave up on them several months ago after concluding that “Trillian Astra” is the new Duke Nukem Forever and–moreover–finding that Pidgin is presently a better option.
I love Gtalk as well, but Pidgin does a solid enough job with XMPP that the convenience of One Client to Rule Them All takes over.
[...] If I try to set my status message to ‘Show current music track’. It crashes! I know it doesn’t happen to everyone, but I know a lot of folks who are facing the same nuisance. This happens if you are using a Media Player which is not Windows Media Player, iTunes or Winamp (with some tweaks). [...]
